ICE Releases from Butte County

ICE custody is a separate system from the Butte County Sheriff's Office. A person may be booked in Butte County on a local case, then leave the jail because the local case resolved, a hold cleared, another agency picked the person up, or an immigration custody path began. The public county records can help identify the local booking event, but the ICE Online Detainee Locator System is the immigration locator when ICE custody is actually involved.

USA.gov describes the ICE locator as a way to search for a person detained by ICE using name, country of birth, date of birth, or A-number. ICE attorney resources state that ODLS includes people currently in ICE custody or released from ICE custody within the last 60 days. That limited recent-release window is important. A person outside the ODLS window, listed under a different name, never transferred to ICE, or held by another agency may not appear.

Confirm an ICE Release

Start with ICE ODLS only when immigration custody is indicated. Butte County's official jail source is weekly booking-log PDFs, not a release-only feed. A local booking log can show a jail event and possible hold clues, but it cannot confirm a later ICE release by itself. Pair ODLS with VINE, Butte Superior Court, and the Sheriff's Records Office when the custody path is mixed.

1. Search ODLS by A-number if known. This is usually the most precise ICE search key.
2. If no A-number is available, search by name, country of birth, and date of birth as USA.gov describes.
3. Compare identifiers carefully. Name order, aliases, and spelling can affect results.
4. If ODLS shows current ICE custody, use the listed facility or ICE contact route for custody information.
5. If ODLS shows a recent release, treat that as an ICE custody result, then use county or court records to explain the earlier Butte County event.
6. If ODLS has no match, check whether the person remained in county custody, moved to another county, entered BOP after a federal sentence, or is outside the recent ICE release window.

Do not read a missing ODLS result as proof that no Butte County booking occurred. The Butte County jail record, VINE status, and Butte Superior Court case can still show a local arrest, release order, transfer, dismissal, sentence, or warrant action even when ICE has no public locator result.

ICE Records and Contact

ICE release questions belong to ICE channels. Butte County records can answer county booking and county release questions. They may also show whether a local event ended in transfer or federal pickup when that information is releasable. For a formal immigration custody record, use ICE FOIA or the ICE contact path listed through ODLS or USA.gov, rather than asking the county jail to produce ICE detention records.

About ICE ODLS

ICE ODLS is a federal immigration custody locator. It is not a county jail, state prison, court portal, BOP locator, or probation database. Its role in Butte County release research is narrow: use it when a person may be in ICE custody or may have been recently released from ICE custody. If the person was released from Butte County Jail on bail, own-recognizance terms, sentence completion, dismissal, or probation without immigration custody, ODLS is not the primary source.

Butte ICE Detainer Context

Butte County research found local ICE context, but it does not support treating every jail release as an ICE case. A KRCR report on a Butte County Board summary said ICE showed interest in 52 of more than 8,700 bookings, and six of the California Values Act cases discussed resulted in arrest by federal agents and ICE. That helps explain why immigration custody can appear in a release search, while also showing that it is not the normal path for most Butte County bookings.

When a person leaves Butte County Jail and does not return home, the key question is whether the jail release was a street release, a court-ordered release with processing delay, a transfer, a state parole or PRCS matter, a federal pickup, or an immigration custody event. The Butte County booking log and court portal may explain the local side. ODLS and ICE FOIA explain the ICE side only when ICE custody is part of the record.

Note: ICE ODLS should be checked only when immigration custody is reasonably indicated by the record or reliable case information.

ICE Release Record Route

A focused records request should ask the right source for the right custody event. For Butte County Jail, request the booking/release record, booking date, release date and time, manner of release, holds, and any receiving agency if releasable. For ICE, use ODLS first, then ICE FOIA if a formal federal immigration custody record is needed. For court context, use the Butte Superior Court portal to find the order or disposition that caused the county jail event to end.

California public-records law can support a request for local arrest and release fields, including the time and manner of release, subject to limits for sealed, juvenile, confidential, safety, and investigative material. Federal immigration records follow federal procedures. Keeping those tracks separate helps prevent a county office from being asked to answer for an ICE event it does not control.
